Bob & Beth

Feliz Havana Silk Dogs

In January of 1997, Beth quit assessing taxes for the City of Toledo to enter into the world of dog grooming.  At grooming school, this wonderful little dog appeared called the Havanese.  We have ten years of breeding and show experience with the Havanese and received the Breeder of Merit Award from the HCA. Our first two Havanese had health problems therefore; their show career ended and they were fixed. We continued to move forward diligently trying to breed healthy dogs, helping and supporting research. Through our efforts in research we discovered our breed had Chrondrodysplasia (CD), bowed legs.  These bowed legs were proven through research to carry health problems related to heart, liver and cataracts. After years breeding diligently to straighter legs not displaying signs of CD, silkier coats, I was producing a different type. This type resembles the early Cuban dogs, bringing back the Cuban heritage this breed evolved from, now known as The Havana Silk Dog rather than the well known Havanese, both from the native origin of Cuba, just two different types. The Havana Silk Dog is more elegant in structure, has a longer muzzle, and a flatter silkier coat, and a longer elegant neck.  This is the type I prefer and the reason we now choose to breed only the Havana Silk Dog. The Havana Silk Dog has a very strict registry, all dogs must be evaluated by a trained evaluator to ensure the correct phenotype, along with having attained a CHIC# through the recommended health tests. They must also be two years of age before given full certification to prevent CD from entering the gene pool.  To learn more about the Havana Silk dog go to www.havanasilkdog.com

We now are members of the Havana Silk Dog Association of America and are proud to now be specializing in breeding the Havana Silk Dog.

To our Mentors along the way and the ones we have yet to learn from…our sincerest Thank You!!  May we teach your lessons well.

Our puppies are hand raised in our home.  Beth does not work to insure good socialization for the puppies.  Socializing puppies is very important, and you cannot do a good job of socialization if the dogs are locked up eight plus hours a day.  Havana Silk Dogs need human contact.

The foremost priority in our breeding program is health and temperament…followed by structure, while showing is secondary when it comes to breeding.

All of our Havana Silk Dogs are fully health tested prior to breeding and you will receive a puppy book with copies of all health testing done on the parents, along with the health history of your new puppy.

We do not ship puppies under any circumstances, Beth is willing to fly the puppy in the cabin to you at your expense if that is more convenient than flying to pick your puppy up yourself. We live 50 miles south of Detroit Metro Airport in Detroit, Michigan and 15 miles from the Toledo Express Airport.
